With $29 lift tickets and 7 runs, the slopes were filled with people even though they were a little out of place. Moving out to Portland Oregon for the summer. If anyone is out that way give me shout. Surfing, Mountain Biking and of course Mt Hood for riding are all on the Agenda and maybe even an ascent of Mt. St. Helens. If you get any sweet summer riding pics would love to post them.

Roldal Freeride Challenge 2008

Roldal, in Western Norway is located 500 meters up into the spine of the mountains that run the entire length of the country. Getting there is a couple hour car/bus ride from the major cities of Bergen, Stavanger and Oslo. The town itself is nestled on a lake that is fed by rivers surging out of Hardangervidda National Park. It is surrounded on all sides by towering plateaus that rise steeply from the lake and valley floor. The Ski center is located 2.8 kilometers to the west just before the highway tunnels for 5 km’s under the ridges which are accessible to riders from the ski area. It was at the end of these tunnels that the Qualifier for the Roldal Freeride Challenge, The final of four stops on The Norwegian Freeride Cup, was to take place. Amidst a steady drizzle of rain and poor visibility all of the non qualified athletes would have to brave the elements and marginal snow conditions (it had been raining for 8 straight days and was beginning to take its toll on the snow as large waterfalls appeared out of the snow only to crash back underneath where one could hear the water as it rushed downhill underneath the riders on its way to the fjord.

Day 1 saw 20 men and women looking to advance into the final. On the women’s side it was Elise Gerlie of Norway who would set herself apart by staying on her feet for the entire run as the other ladies had difficulty handling the tricky snow conditions and Phat to flat airs, which would be the undoing of many of the Men who were to come. On the men’s side only two were able to stay on their feet for the entire run. Jan Fredrik Westgaard and Torolf Tofte were the only riders to get points for fluidity and control. They moved on.

Day 2 was Final day 1 and it turned out to be the first sun in a while. But the damage had already been done. All of the water had destabilized the steeper venues and the riders were sent back to the qualifying venue. The peak was about 350 meters above and about 4km back from the road. It had a pitch ranging between 15 and 45 degrees as it started flat on top into the 1st of three steep sections separated by flats and the final Phat to extremely flat. 6 women and 14 men left the finish with 3 hours to walk up and choose a line. The night before at the riders meeting it was stressed that a fall meant a control score of zero and stopping would be a zero in fluidity. Judging from the scores awarded at yesterday’s qualifier they were serious. There were two starting gates. One on top that could get almost anywhere on the venue, and one to the left to access the steep chutes and rock drops.

The ladies kicked off the comp and it was Charlotte Hagen putting down a fast flawless run not high on line score but with an aggressiveness not seen in the other women. Kaisa Harkonen also put down a solid run with a couple airs to push her into the super final. Eline Garlie rounded out the qualifiers with a 3rd.

1. Charlotte Hagen NOR

2. Kaisa Harkonen FIN

3. Eline Garlie NOR

Daniel Regensberger started it off for the men from the left gate dropped a 5 meter rock and flew across the flats to the next 5 meter drop which cart wheeled him on the landing before finishing with a clean double through the bottom section. Raphael Bullet went next from the top dropping a 5 meter cornice, splitting the venue into the middle rock section where he had a spill before getting to the final section jumping a crevasse then finishing. Dave Watson followed and took a similar run as Raphael except dropping a 5 meter rock just passed the cornice. Then on the exit air a 3meter drop ass-checked the flat landing. Asle Tangvik then took an easy line down the middle. But what was special about Asle was the fact that he had only one leg. He rode a single ski with poles that had small skis. He had been competing in the snowboard class for the last couple of years. Supposedly he wanted to compete in Alpine but the organizers denied him the Big Top at the Circus and threw him in the Freak show in the side tent with the snowboarders. Asle had a fast line without a fall which boded well for him. Havard Anensen winner of The Lofoton Freeride held a few weeks ago in The Lofoton Island chain tried to drop 10 meters but blew up and slid about 50 meters before getting up and finishing his run. For some reason a DNF was awarded. Then Will Brommelsiek left the top gate for the right side and a smooth triple before zigging where he should have zagged and ended up 2 meters away from a 50 meter cliff. This was out of the venue for good reason and he unstrapped and walked back up. Then came back into the venue finished his run with a 5 meter drop to a double and a DNF. Jan Fredrik took a similar line to his #1 qualifying run carrying more speed but starfished in an easy part of the line. Big time Swedish pro Daniel Furberg followed. From the 2nd gate into the steep rocky section where he sent it 5 meters into the open carving nice turns down the mellow left side before finishing through the waterfall chute on the left side of the bottom steep section, a nice safe line. Morten Brockermann showed everyone that making turns and avoiding all rocks would put you through to the super final. Then David Magnusson the best Norwegian Freerider, fresh off a 3rd at Extreme Verbier, the Championship of the Freeride World Tour, started at the top. Coming down the right side making big smooth turns he hit the steep mid section and dropped where Will had come off a few minutes before, went right at the bottom with an easy exit. Drawing the final run for snowboarders was Torolf Tofte who took the exact same run as Magnusson dropped the cliff bigger then the other two and carried a bunch of speed to the finish. The field was cut in half excluding the DNF’s and the top 6 moved on for the men.

1. Torolf Tofte NOR

2. David Magnusson NOR

3. Morten Brockermann NOR

4. Daniel Furberg SWE

5. Asle Tangvik NOR

6. Raphael Bullet SUI

Saturday blew up Bluebird for the super final. Since it had been clear and cold the night before a new venue above the ski area was chosen. Accessed by the only Ski lift in Roldal with a Northwest face and about 200 meters of 50 degree vert. Riders left and center of the venue had mandatory exit airs between 7 and 25 meters. Eline Garlie got the party started down the right side carrying a good amount of speed into the bottom chute and the finish. Kaisa followed her not as aggressively but she dropped a couple 3 meter rocks with out a fall. Charlotte tried to hold the lead carrying good speed down the right side and was on her way to victory until she wiped out off the bottom rock.

Raphael was 1st to go for the men dropping right of center onto the shelve from 5 meters then working right off the shelf and down through the lower chute carrying good speed and off another 5 meter rock at the bottom. Then Asle came down the right side of the venue and tried to air into the chute but went to his side and got his pole caught underneath him. Daniel Furberg was up next. He dropped onto the top shelf made a big sweeping right turn with a sweet air out and down to the bottom right of the chute but could not manage to hold on to a 7 meter drop and took a cartwheel before finishing. Then Morten dropped the cornice as part of a double over a 5 meter rock lost control and spun out back to his feet where he became the only rider to drop the lower cliffs sticking it from 10 meters and finishing up with the run of the day in Men’s Snowboard. Magnusson then came off the top cornice with some heat and struggled to get it back under control before he exited the shelf over a rock and into the bottom area. Passing up the chute he set his sight on a little shelf but baubled before a 5 meter drop which ended in a double cartwheel. Torolf then took the final run dropping the cornice off the top then heading right with a double to exit the shelf, flying back into the bottom chute and back to back top runs. Here are the final results

Women’s Snowboard
Started off the adventure with Will Brommelsiek and Cory Zila who like myself went to qualify for The Freeride World Tour. We all met at the Fiskepieren in Stavenger for a jet boat ride up the fjord to Sauda and the 3rd stop of the Norwegian Freeride Cup. Unfortunately The comp was canceled because of poor visibility. But got 2 days beforehand and here are the pics.

Venture Snowboards Rocks

Well everyone as the season winds down wanted to send Thanx out to Klemmen and Lisa Branner for continuing to put out sick boards namely The Zephyr which I ride in a 162, 166, and 171 wide ( 28 cm wide ). If you ever thought about going wide here is a little story. Fellow competitor Casey Vandenbroek is one my riding bro's here in Snowmass and I have been trying all year to get him on our boards. He has been riding Burton, Arbor, and High Society. I talked him into riding my 162 on a fat pow day. His only answer was I can't believe I did not listen to you before, I can stomp any landing and come out of it as smooth as a Cadillac. He is now hooked and can attest to the performance of the Zephyr. It's torsional stiffness is unsurpassed on the market. Overall flex pattern snaps you through turns and the construction is so pimp that durability is my favorite aspect. Also anyone with big feet can get closer to no toe drag which translates to being able to be secure on steeper slopes. Venture also offers a softer twin tip called the Helix, several powder boards with different stiffnesses, and the Divide a split board made up to 181 cm to really get around and let loose in the backcountry. Klemm and Lisa Thanx again for keeping it local, Keeping it Green, and responding to the needs of riders.

Check em out at www.venturesnowboards.com

Wallace Westfeldt Rides Forever

Hello Rippers,

It is a very sad day for myself, The Roaring Fork Valley and the Westfeldt Family as we come to terms with the passing of Wallace Westfeldt. Wally died yesterday doing what he loved, Riding his board. He was filming in Tonar Bowl behind Aspen Highlands, hucked a huge cliff that did not go well. He was a future legend in snowboarding, combining park and pipe with the Big Mountain scene, piling up wins in the process before the age of 21. 22 is way to young and the loss will be noticed in years to come. The Silver King is an impressive 1200 Vert Peak with a spine of rock down the middle of the venue, allowing the riders to find tight steep chutes, Rocks to pop off of, or an elevated snowfield with a mandatory 40 footer for an exit. The conditions were less than ideal because it had rained to the top of the mountain then got cold and started snowing. Day 1 for the riders was taking place on the Snorting Elk Bowl, a 500 vertical foot venue with tight tree chutes at the top approaching 60 degrees, some big rocks up top, and a technical rock section on the right and tight trees to small cliffs to the left on the bottom. There was about 3 inches of fresh on top of the hockey rink for the riders.
This year marked the first time women had competed in snowboard . 7 women showed up to join 14 men looking to be crowned champion.
The Women started the event off through a constantly changing pattern of snow, fog, and flat light that made it very difficult to stick your airs. Many of the women at Crystal were either 1st time or second time competitors. I was impressed by Heather Chapin , a Mt Hood local who was very nimble on her feet, could have ridden a more difficult line, but ended up in third for the day. 2nd place went to Alison Hayes from Whistler who looked like a ghost coming down the venue just as a squall line hit. How the judges could see her I don’t know. But it was Wily veteran Shannan Yates, last weekends winner from Snowmass, who came in ripped the most difficult line in the tree chutes and aired out the bottom.
On the men’s side the action was very interesting because only Ben Crocker Adam Devargas, and Dave Watson had competed before on this venue and went 1st, 2nd, and 4th on the Podium last year. Dave Watson would set the bar for the day by tearing up a tight tree shoot to a 15 footer that sent him into the bottom trees where jump turns ruled until there was nowhere left to go. A tree was pushed aside a point of the board and a 20 foot up and 30 feet out came out of nowhere which was stomped, and then pointed to the finish. Ben Crocker, reigning Silver King champion stomped his big air at the bottom but did not get the line score and was left in 5th with Adam Devargas in 6th. Sandwiched in between were three first year Freeride competitors. In 4th was Doug Thayer from Tahoe. Local Sky Risvold sat in 3rd, and Aaron Robinson from Whitefish, Montana was perched in 2nd. 1.12 points was all that separated 6th from 2nd. Place and then a 3.56 point gap to Dave Watson in 1st.

The final was set for The Silver King. As usual the King was more elusive then accommodating, not holding any of the snow that had been continually falling since it rained all the way to the top of the venue 4 days earlier. The women would start the day off with weather holds and poor visibility as the squall lines pushed through the venue all day. Most of the women decided to test themselves on the riders left side of the venue, called Pinball’s a 50 degree slope interspersed with trees, rocks, and pepper. The 1st couple of ladies avoided anything crazy and just put down smooth fast pow turns all the way to the bottom. Jamie Coughlin was one of them and her run would push her from the bottom of the pack all the way up to 3rd and the podium with the 2nd highest score of the day for the women. Alison Kayes maneuvered her way through pinballs
And held on to 2nd position overall. But it was The Shannan Yates show again, aggressively carving up Pinballs, dropping a rock band and flying down to the finish.
The men took over after Shannan. Tyler Dewitt, sitting in next to last, started off in Hairballs a tight steep chute that scored really well and was able to move up 5 places to finish in 7th. He was followed by Kirkwood local Tim Roberts who took a nice line through the top of Pinballs then lost his way and was left in 9th place. Next came Jake Laskin, who was the only competitor ski or snowboard who attempted to ride Pinball chute, a scary long chute not very wide that he even aired in the middle of. He might have moved up even farther had he stuck his landing off the left side of the spine, but settled for 5th. He was followed by Adam Devargas who came in to Hairball’s hot, then aired out which caused him to go right by the middle chute. But it was his aggressive line through the elevated snowfield and a 40 footer to get out that gave him the highest score of the day and moved him all the way up to the podium and a 3rd place finish. He was followed by Ben Crocker, notorious big air artist who came down through Hairballs, the middle chute, and onto the elevated snowfield for something big and a shot at the podium. He eyed up a 70 footer pointed it but did not have enough momentum, hit a cliff up high and then bounced onto his head from 60 feet for 6th. Doug Thayer who was sitting in 4th then tried his luck on the Pinball side missed his airs and fell to 8th place. Sky Risvold took his run to the far right of the venue. Not the most technical line but one with fresh pow and a big launch at the bottom for which he received a sickbird nomination, and the second highest score given to a snowboarder at the comp. He was rewarded with a 2nd place finish overall. It was down to the final two riders to see who would be King of The Silver King. Aaron Robinson then followed Sky over to the right hit the big air at the bottom to the Ka-Ka’s of a sick bird Nomination. The lack of difficulty on his run would drop him two places to 4th. Only the 1st round leader Dave Watson was left up top. Dropping into Hairball’s the crowd saw why he was in 1st as he made solid 180 degree jump turns through the chute then came down to the middle chute which was tighter then hairballs and still managed to flow smoothly through and onto the elevated snowfield. Too far left to drop the big cliffs he tried to get back to the right hit a section of ice and slid right passed the tree airs to the left of the cliffs, finished up with a mainline at the bottom and the 3rd highest score of the run, holding off Sky and Adam for the top podium spot.

The Silverking: Stop # 2, Crystal Mtn. Having Snowed 16 inches at the beginning of the week, Sunny skies and warm temperatures ruled all week leaving conditions a little less then ideal. The Two Trees area is an elevated snowfield with a mandatory air from 25 to 80 feet, which is also the toughest line on the venue. The ladies started off the day and Shannon Yates separated herself from the rest of the field by smoking the Dogleg and then dropping 15 feet off the rock shelf to a first place. Local lady rippers Nathalie Nevin and Onna Konicek rounded out the top Three.
For the men the day was started off by Ben Crocker dropping a front flip off the Two Trees shelf which would set the bar for the Day and end up in the Local Paper. He was followed directly by Eli Lieberman who started out in dogleg then sent a perfect back flip over the lower rock shelf. Newcomer Jason Nielson decided to drop the Diving Board for a huge 60 footer to set the crowd on fire. Tyler Dewitt stoked the crowd by splitting the trees with mad speed. Jonathan Penfield showed everyone at the venue how to ride The Double with smooth style no matter what the speed. Local shralper Casey Vandenbroek was on his way to the run of the day doubling the Two Trees shelf til he knocked himself out landing the bottom air. Most of the riders decided to test their skills in the Two Trees Area but it was Snowmass local and last years champion Dave Watson who wowed the crowd with some nice jump turns and the most solid stomp of the day. The field was cut to 11 and here is how it went
1. Dave Watson
2. Riley Gessele
3. Wallace Westfeldt
4. Jonathan Penfield
5. Tyler Dewitt
5. Ben Crocker
7. Jason Nielson
8. Matt Fulop
9. Jake Laskin
10. Jeff Adeler
11 Eli Lieberman
The final day would see blue skies, warm air, and 65 athletes in The Burn Cliffs looking for ways to end up on the podium. The order would be switched and run in reverse order. So the women skiers led off followed by snowboard women. Gluteus with a short, tight chute was one of the few places to sneak through the cliff band with out leaving your feet. All of the ladies used this chute except Shannon Yates who went up onto the pillows between Gluteus and Triple Drop doubled off the top and then Finished her winning run with smooth turns down to the finish.
1. Shannon Yates
2. Onna Konicek
3. Natalie Nevins
The men were faced with the task of sweeping up the rear after 40 Men’s skiers had torn up the venue as we had done for them the day before. Matt Fulop and Jeff Adeler both dropped out of the final due to injury and illness leaving 9 riders. Eli led things off with a nice smooth line down the Triple Drop. Jason Nielson stepped it up big again by boosting off a little nub next to the rope in Stihletto for another sixty plus air and a sickbird nomination. Tyler dewitt stepped up huge off the top of triple from 35 ft onto a narrow shelf and navigating the bottom 2 cliffs then cart wheeling in the bumps at the bottom to dash any hopes of the podium. Wallace, sitting in 3rd left the top hoping to make up points on Riley and Dave. Picking Triple drop which he rode to victory 2 years ago he wasn’t able to move up with the sun dropping, the crust forming, and the snow getting hard. Riley then dropped into XXX which had the best pillow lines in the venue and he picked a good one. Lining up a double it was obvious he had found some soft north facing snow. Dropping 40 onto this little pillow and then another 15 out of the cliffs, Riley charged down the bump field to the finish as the onlookers up at Gwynn’s High Alpine went crazy. Watson finished off the comp with a Triple drop run that could only be considered crispy at best. Trying to keep it fluid and fast he chose to split the rocks at the top but landed in a bomb hole and had to push out. Stomped the second cliff and then sent it over the third with tons of speed, coming down through tree branches and pulling off the high speed landing and avoiding trees in front of him at the last minute. Unlike the ladies field, the podium for the men was up in the air and would be announced 2 hours later at the awards ceremony. Here is your 2008 Podium.
1. Riley Gesselle
2. A perfect setting for the 2nd stop of the Freeride World Tour Quest series. This represents freeride competitors ranked 15-100 striving to enter the top 14 and the Big dance.
Day 1 started with the open Qualifier on The Silvettra Nova, easily the biggest ski area in the Montafon. The open, where up and coming riders can just sign up, show up, and look to show the judges and spectators what they are all about. There is no Prize money involved, only the chance to compete against the Quest Riders. 20 male and 6 female riders entered for the opportunity where 5 men and 2 women would move on. A wide open 1400 vertical ft. venue with a one hour walk to the start gate, Versettla at 2372 meters loomed over the venue of deep fresh snow. The first competitor to go was a men’s skier who promptly sloughed a huge patch of the venue and went for a little ride. It was a Russian onslaught with Pavel Lvov and Konstantin Galat dominating the field. Sergio Aranjo of Spain stood in 3rd between the Swiss sandwich of Guillame Burkhalter and Mika Voiral. In the women’s side Aline Bock of Germany and Fanny Gras of France blew away the others to charge into the Quest.
For the 2nd and final day of Competition, the riders converged on the Hoch Joch 5000 ft above Schruns. Run 1 would descend from the top of Zamanspitze 900 feet above the runs and littered with rocks and cliffs. From the top you could not see past about 10 feet in front of you as the slope dropped out of sight to reappear again well down the hill. Pavel Lvov got an early start and took advantage of it stomping a front flip off the top. Laid down some nice turns and a solid air at the bottom to throw up back to back high scoring runs. Only American Will Brommelsiek would challenge Pavel, by sticking a double into some very questionable snow, come out clean, drop a couple of rocks and have his best comp run in years. Austrian Daniel Reitmann began to show his presence snatching the 3rd highest score and a nice set up for the final. The field was cut in half and 16 male riders got one more run. The level of riding in women’s division took it up a notch as Aline Bock and Fanny Gras continued where they left off charging the run and aggressively dropping features in front of them. Annina Karvinen of Finland had her best run of the entire series to squeeze between the two in 2nd.
The final run of the Quest took place just below the peak of The Hochjoch at 2320 meters and a 40 minute hike straight up its 45 degree slope. Situated directly across from a Bierhof it allowed ideal viewing for the hundreds of onlookers who were hanging out in lounge chairs, sipping beers, and watching the Action on a sunny afternoon. There were 40 riders left. 16 men ski and snowboard and 4 women ski and snowboard to determine who would move on to Rodol, Norway. Due to High Avalanche dangerthe men went first. As the men alternated it appeared very early that most riders were heading for the left side of the venue. A few tried to rock this little chute but all got caught up, wasting valuable time. Reitmann took control from the top with a nice air into the runand then an off the hook huge Backside three, stomped the landing and pulled the highest score awarded to a snowboarder in the entire series. Dave Watson then went skiers right to enjoy untouched snow. With a fast smooth style he made everything look easy. The Judges liked it and gave him the 2nd highest score tied with Gunthar Pluner of Austria whose solid aggressive line down the center of the venue would move him up. That left 8 ladies on the snowboard side. Having dominated from the start, Aline Bock came out fast, included multiple features and stood atop the podium. Fanny Gras sealed up 2nd and Elisabeth Paul Stuck her airs to move past Annina into third. After scores for the two runs were tallied Austrian Daniel Reitmann came out on top With Pavel Lvov holding on to 2nd after an outstanding run out of the open to the podium. Will Brommelsiek rounded out the podium, having put back to back solid runs together.
All that was left was to announce the riders who would be traveling to Norway in May for The Quest Championship and a spot in next years Challenge.
Men
1.
